OPINIONES

» The latest on Alan Gross
La Alborada - Feb 13

The Associated Press has presented the most detailed report yet on the activities of Alan Gross in Cuba: how he presented himself to Cuba's government and the people with whom he met, what he carried with him, the capabilities of that equipment, and his recurrent fears about what might happen to him.

According to the AP's investigation, Gross used a number of other travelers to Cuba to distribute the material that was to be taken into the island, some of which was specifically forbidden by Cuban customs regulations. The last bit of equipment carried in by Gross was a chip that, according to a technology expert, is "provided most frequently to the Defense Department and the CIA."

We quote from the report:

"Nothing about USAID's Cuba programs is covert or classified in any way," says Mark Lopes, a deputy assistant administrator. "We simply carry out activities in a discreet manner to ensure the greatest possible safety of all those involved."
....
"Of course, this is covert work," said Robert Pastor, President Jimmy Carter's national security adviser for Latin America and now director of the Center for Democracy and Election Management at American University in Washington. "It's about regime change."
....
USAID has long relied on visitors willing to carry in prohibited material, such as books and shortwave radios, U.S. officials briefed on the programs say. And USAID officials have acknowledged in congressional briefings that they have used contractors to bring in software to send encrypted messages over the Internet, according to participants in the briefings.

The documents provided to AP for the investigation covered the period beginning when, AP states, Gross began working for DAI, the company contracted by USAID. That was in 2009. However, other reports indicate that Gross had first gone to Cuba in 2004, to deliver a video camera and medicine to the head of the Cuban Freemasons. The latter turned out to be a state security agent, Jose Manuel Collera Vento. The package came from Marc Wachtenheim, the founder and director of the Cuba Development Initiative (CDI) at the Pan American Development Foundation (PADF).

Collera Vento's story is told in one of a series of episodes on US actions against Cuba, produced with information from state security: Ayudas peligrosas, en Las Razones de Cuba 1/2, beginning at 11:07. It continues in a second part.

Collera Vento was to organize a network of people throughout the country to be ready to rise up at the right time. He met in Havana with Wachtenheim and other agents related to the US interests section.

From reading the mass media one would get the impression that Alan Gross was the only person acting on behalf of USAID (or State Department, or CIA) in Cuba. Watching the many episodes of the mentioned series, one would come to a very different conclusion.

Agents other than Gross have attempted to create satellite networks around the island, to the point of delivering dish antennas disguised as short surfboards. One such case is recounted at "Verdades y principios", de la serie Las razones de Cuba 2/2.

Covert agents are not all like James Bond. Alan Gross is now 62 years old, and his family needs him. We hope that he is set free sometime soon for humanitarian reasons. We hold the same hope for the Cuban Five, whose families also need them. Mainly, we hope that the blockade is lifted soon, and that relations between the two countries become normal.

» Ciro Bianchi Ross - El secuestro de Falla Bonet (I) .
